Breast cancer is the second most common cancer among women though not restricted to women alone, can also be seen in men but not so common. Regular breast cancer screening will go a long way in decreasing breast cancer mortality rate. So is important that women take the proper steps to detect breast cancer at its earliest and most treatable stage.


Major Ways to Prevent Breast Cancer amongst Women Include

Maintaining a healthy weight

Exercising regularly

Limiting alcohol consumption to one drink a day

Getting screened for breast cancer regularly.


In addition to making a commitment to live healthier, the following screenings are highly recommended for early detection, especially when it is most treatable.

Breast Self-Examination

BSE should be performed monthly by women commencing from 20 years. Women should know how their breasts normally feel and report any change promptly to their physician.

Clinical Breast Examination

Women in their 20s and 30s should have a CBE as part of a routine health check, preferably every three years. Women whose age fall between 40 years and above should have a CBE performed annually by a health care professional.

Baseline Mammography

One baseline mammogram should be performed for women between ages 35 and 39 years.


An annual mammogram is recommended for women beginning at age 40 years or younger for women with higher risk.
