Over 200 people have been killed following a 7.1 magnitude earthquake which struck Mexico yesterday 19th of September 2017.
More than 200 people are dead after a magnitude-7.1 earthquake rocked central Mexico Tuesday afternoon, hitting on the 32nd anniversary of the biggest quake to ever strike the country’s capital.
The earthquake struck about 75 miles southeast of Mexico City but caused extensive damage there, leveling at least 44 buildings, including homes, schools and office buildings, according to Mexican, President Enrique Pena Nieto who did a flyover of the city Tuesday afternoon.
Among the dead are at least 22 people, including students and at least two adults, from a collapsed primary school in the south of the city. Pena Nieto visited the school late Tuesday. He said the 22 bodies have been recovered but that 30 children and eight adults are still missing.
Earthquake occur mostly along techonomic plate boundaries especially on the pacific ring of fire. It is the shaking of the surface of the earth, resulting from the sudden release of energy in the earth’s lithosphere that creates seismic waves. Earthquake can range in magnitude from those that are so weak that they cannot be felt to these violent enough to toss people around and destroy whole cities. If the epicenter of a large earthquake is located offshore, the seabed may be displaced sufficiently to cause a tsunami. Earthquakes can also trigger landslides and occasionally volcanic activity.
Earthquake is considered one of the natural disasters which is usually experienced in different parts of the world but not common in Africa. Earthquake could come by shaking and ground rupture, landslides and avalanches, fires, soil liquefaction, tsunami, floods, human impacts.
Major earthquake occurrences has been recorded in history in places like Asia, South America, Australia/Oceania, North America, Europe and Antarctica. The most devastating earthquake ever recorded was 1556 Shaanxi earthquake which claimed over 830,000 lives. The deadliest of the 20th century was Tangshan earthquake in 1976 which claimed between 240,000 to 655,000 lives. The earthquake with the largest magnitude of 9.5 happened 22 May 1960 Chilean earthquake.
This year 2017 over 80 cases of earthquakes has been recorded across the world from January till date in places like Fiji islands, India, Philippines, Italy, Colombia, Alaska, Mexico and some others.
This is a natural disaster and cannot be avoided but can be manages and prepared for by future forecasting, evacuation and lots other measures.
At this point I join the global community to sympathize with Mexicans, this is the second time of such disaster occurring in Mexico within this month of September the previous claimed over 90 lives and barely some days after there is another strike, it is really a great tragedy.
